THCC Christmas Party date confirmed - Saturday 13th December 2008

THe THCC Xmas party is going to be held Saturday 13th December in the Prospect of Whitby pub. There will be food, there will be music, there will be games, there will be dancing and there might be a lot of other mayhem too! So put it in your diary. Further details to follow.

The Tower Hamlets Canoe Club web site will be unavailable on Thursday 25 September for several hours from 9pm.

The site is being migrated to a different server and any forum posts or page changes made after 9pm will be lost. I will post another message saying when this is complete.

Basin Access this weekend (22nd August)

BBQ Tuesday 15th July

Cathy will be running a BBQ next Tuesday 15th July. The formula is the same as always - £5 will buy you tons of flesh and bread and two beverages. Food + drink available from 8.30pm.

Cathy would really appreciate any help setting up the BBQ as she is currently going to be doing this on her own (although Gary is very kindly doing the shopping).

It should be great - be there or be square.

There's a BBQ this Tuesday 10th June at the basin to coincide with beginners night. Be there or be square, all are welcome!. Food and drinks available from 8.30pm by the basin's BBQ. Cost: £5 (approx, price to be confirmed on the night) will get you slap-up food and two beverages. Anyone willing to help out meet us by the BBQ at 7pm.

Help Needed on Tuesday Nights at the club

Hi All,

Recently we have had a couple of issues regarding locking up whilst we have been on the water, because of this the committee has decided that we should return to having a dedicated duty officer every Tuesday. It will be their responsibility to ensure that everywhere is locked and secured once we are all on the water.

This will be operated on a rota basis arranged a few weeks in advance…. so I am looking for volunteers to help with this, anyone who has been with the club for a couple of months and is not engaged in coaching would be appreciated!

It’s not a mammoth task to perform but will make sure that we maintain good relations with the basin and most importantly make sure that all of the club and basin kit is safe and secure.

Anyone who can help please let me know by replying on the forumm, pm’ing me or catching me down the club,.

Booking is required for the beginners course which runs for four consecutive Tuesdays: 13, 20, 27 May & 3 June. There is no need to book if you wish to join us as an experienced paddler.

DW - Team Tower Hamlets did it again

The 60th edition of the Devizes to Westminster canoe race promised to be a tough one. Rumors of freezing temperatures, snow, gale winds and flooded Thames were just the icing on an already large cake consisting of 125 miles of paddling, 77 portages and the odd hyper aggressive swan.

The rumors turned out to be all true and so we started on saturday evening all wrapped up in our warmest paddling kit. By the 15th mile, the kayak and paddlers were covered in ice but it was a pleasant cloudless night with the full moon lighting our way through the Wiltshire countryside. With the regular appearances of our support crew by the bank side, it was all good fun even if a bit nippy and we were catching up with the boats that have started before us. Dawn broke out as we entered the suburbs of Reading, which for us meant only one thing : hot breakfast and dry clothes.
With renewed spirits, we set off on the Thames; next target : Teddington where the tideway starts. We had been going for 11 hours and, if we kept that pace, we would be on time to catch the ebbing tide, no pressure then. The Thames locks defiled like a playboater's to-do list : Marsh, Hambledon, Hurley, Marlow, Boulters, Chertsey, Shepperton, Sunbury. With the reliable help of the support team, we made good progress and reached Teddington after 10 hours 30 minutes on the Thames. We were on time for the tide, nothing could stop us.
From then on, it was a gentle paddle down the tideway, fighting off bum ache and drawing on our last reserves. Although they seemed very slow to appear on the horizon, we ticked the bridges one by one. The elements seemed reluctant to let us get off so easily and we were treated in the last 2 hours with snow, wind and storm.
One last dash for glory and we passed under Westminster bridge at 19:53, 24 hours 11 minutes after we started from Devizes. Our rank is 30th out of the 60 boats that crossed the finishing line (out of 120 starters) which is quite a good performance given the conditions. Well done to all involved !

For 2008, Team Tower Hamlets consisted of :
Alan, Dave, Nick,Tristan and Tim who had the hard job of keeping us fed, hydrated and happy during the races (watersides serie + DW)
Klaudia and Julien who just had to sit in the boat and paddle downstream

PS : Special thanks to the good people at Richmond canoe club who helped us train and race during the 4 months of preparation.
