Sea Kayaking for 2008

Sea Kayaking Rep Nick invites all interested paddlers to a meeting to discuss and plan what how where and when, upstairs at the Basin Tuesday 29th Jan 6-9 pm. DVD action, maps photos.

Everyone is welcome at this anaugral meeting of the club's sea kayaking section - for people of all abilities and experience. A chance to meet some of the more experienced sea kayakers and find out why it is so popular aand enjoyed by so many at the club.

From 6 pm: DVD of sea kayaking action and slideshow on big screen, refreshments available

From 7 pm: information and discussion of equipment, training, trips, getting on the Thames, Club Rules, BCU etc. Discussion of possible trips and venues for 2008.

Jersey Sea Kayaking Symposium 2008

Jersey Canoe Club have started to take bookings for their Symposium next May. Kevin Mansell sent me the following details:

The event will start on the Friday evening 23rd May with a welcome reception. This will be followed by 3 days of workshops, paddles and lectures. These sessions will be lead by some of the best names in the sea kayaking world as well as some of Jersey’s resident but highly experienced coaches.

We are introducing a number of new sessions for 2008, including stand up paddle boards, developing core stability etc as well as running the usual favourites. Other practical sessions include tidal race skills and sea caves and cliff jumping. The keynote lecture is on the Sunday evening. A sea kayak slalom will hopefully be held one evening, allowing paddlers to demonstrate their skills.

During the following week there will be opportunities to visit some of the offshore reefs and other islands, weather permitting, as well as exploring our superb coastal waters in more detail. The evening events will also continue with a BBQ and other social events.

There are a number of kayaks and equipment available for rental at a cost of £10 per day. Please let me know if you are interested in this.

The Symposium is open to paddlers of all ability levels and because Jersey is a holiday destination there is plenty to keep non-paddling partners and family members occupied. For a slight additional fee family members are able to participate in the evening activities, please contact me for further details.

Harry Whelan is speaking about his circumnavigation of Britain by sea kayak last summer at the New River Rats in Stoke Newington on Wednesday, 7 June. Admission is a fiver.

4 star weekend with Aled Williams in Wales

Plans are being made to do a weekend of sea paddling with Aled Williams of Rockpool Kayaks in Anglesey in September. Aled is a renowned coach and the weekend will offer the chance to do a 4 star assessment as well as to try some Rockpool kayaks.

If you are interested please reply to the forum thread so that we can work out the numbers and costs (you will need your 3 star and some sea kayaking experience - talk to me if you are unsure).

Sea kayaking course at Shadwell

Shadwell Basin ran an introduction to sea kayaking course over the weekend of 6/7 May on the basin and the tidal river. The course covered sea kayak specific techniques including rescues and trip planning considerations.

This course is run regularly and is open to those who have their 3 star award. Further courses are provisionally scheduled for Sat & Sun 8-9 July and Sat & Sun 14-15 October.
