Beginners courses
If you have very little or no paddling experience you can attend one of our beginners courses. These are run approximately once a month and consist of four sessions run over consecutive Tuesday evenings. The course costs £30 for the four sessions which is payable on booking. The fee is not normally refundable and no credits will be given for missed sessions.
Please note: You must be able to swim 50 metres wearing a bouyancy aid.
You will need to book a place for the beginners courses, except through the Winter months (November to March), when you can just turn up. Please come along to Shadwell Basin at 6.30 pm with appropriate clothes. You will get very wet so bring a change of clothes and a towel. On completing the course you may join the club. See below for membership details.
Experienced paddlers
If you are an experienced paddler you can come along for a trial session to see if you like the club. Trial sessions cost £7.50 per week and you must join the club after 3 trial sessions if you want to continue to paddle with us. You do not need to book but you do need to come along on a new member start date as advertised above. Please note: If you do not bring along your BCU certificates as proof of your experience you will need to join the beginners group on your first week so that we can guage your skill level before transferring you to an appropriate training group.
If you would like to meet us before coming along to a trial session then please join us upstairs in the Prospect of Whitby Pub (next to the Basin) at 9 pm. This is where we socialise after paddling. If you can't find us then ask the friendly bar staff or look for people carrying paddles.
General queries
All queries about what we do, when we meet, fees, membership, equipment etc can be answered by looking at the website. You will receive a faster response this way. The club is run on a strictly non-commercial, voluntary basis so we cannot always respond immediately to e-mails. Should you have a query that you cannot find information about then feel free to contact us by e-mail using the address: members at towerhamletscanoeclub.co.uk.
Membership
Annual membership costs £50 (£30 unwaged). £2.50 must be paid whenever you attend the club. An additional £2.50 is paid if you use the pool. As an alternative to paying a weekly subscription of £2.50, you can buy an annual season ticket for £99 which covers all your paddling for a year including all Tuesdays, Thursdays and any weekend trips.
To apply for membership of the club please either submit an online application or download and print a paper form and hand it to the club treasurer or secretary.
Members' Handbook
New club members should take time to familiarise themselves with the Members’ Handbook.
This sets out the club rules and the standard of conduct that is required from members.
