    Trip options + stuff

    Hullo

I though I'd stick my head in here and see if i can help you plan your trips.

Officual stuff: 2, 2 hour+ trips are required for the 2 star award. If you are using Basin or THCC equipement you need to follow our rules which say that for sheltered water (canals etc) are pretty much the same as the basin: you need an L2 Coach (plus support) with you, and for non-sheltered water - the Thames for example: you'll need and L3 coach to help out - these rare beasts are often hired as they are very much in demand.

Previously some trips that have been taking by 2 stars and some new suggestions

    1. Taking the boats to Limehouse basin and paddling a circular route round the canels to victoria park and back. - easy-ish to plan as Limehouse basin is 15 mins walk from THCC base. You may still need a trailer as boats can be heavy but one car and a trailler could be enough
    2. finding  + hiring and L3 (from Shadwell Basin perhaps) and taking a beginners trip on the thames - group size will be controlled by the L3 and the other coaches availible. Its great to get out on the Thames in them long and pointy boats
    3. Take a trip out by car north of london to one of the canals, a previous group when to the River Lea in Hardfordshire - a long drive but its pretty one you ge there and there is a baby wier to have a slide down at the end of the day
    4. Head up to Totenham Hale (trains, tube and loads of buses head here) for Lea Value Canue Hire. 10 mins walk from the station you can hire kayaks and canoes for the day. They can provide pfds, paddles and i think have a changing room. Sarah and me did a recie up there ealier in the year. Its not a scenic trip but its an easy alternative and allows a mix of boats.
    5. A couple of people have suggested the wandle as a good river to do a 2* trip on - it runs through south london to the thames
    6. Something far more exciting someone else will suggest.

Sarah and I are happy to help you guys make plans and if availible will come along if ya want us to, but we are not L2s. So you'll need to be sweet talking some others in the club.

    not only but also

I should have mentioned the Tottenham hale trip has a pub at a turn around point with space to get a load of boats out of the water. You can see me having a cuppa at the stop here

    Re: 2* trip anyone?

Hello Joe. Have a look at the thread for the recent open canoe trip on the river Stour in kent. Its further away than Dans suggestions but might be worth considering.

    Sunday Canal Paddle

Sarah wants her kayaking fix, so we are planning to head up to Lea Valley Canue and Cycle Hire and take out a couple of kayaks and go up (or down) the canal.

If you would like to join us, then you are welcome (but see small print below) We will be at Tottenham Hale station at 11am sharp. on Sunday. PM me if you are planning to join us and i can collect mobile numbers and ensure that they are expecting us.  I expect us to be paddling for 3-4 hours and the cost to be 20 quid each[1]. but everything is to play for. If you are driving there that is cool - let us know.

Bring Photo Id and your star certificates. Bring food and drink - though there are a few pubs we might not reach one.

Small print: This is not an official THCC trip. Though as a group we will be looking after each other and expect to stay together, it is not coach led - its a mates paddle. its up to you to turn up, pay, look after yourself, assess any situations, be safe, bring enough clothes, food. and stay warm enough. If you are not sure who's responsibility something it, its probably yours *grin*. Costs are on the web site linked to

[1] (boat paddle pfd, potentially locker + shower but unsure - call them if you need to know)

    Re: 2* trip anyone?

Ok, Its good to people are interested in the trip, i think there are a few people that want to help with the organization that would be great too, there are some good ideas from Dan and Sarah.

If anyone is about on tuesday evening in the pub to have a chat about dates and routes then i will be there after paddeling.

Initial ideas are something close-ish so its not to much of a pain to sort out travel and planning routes. and if we try for one weekend soon befor the weather gets even worse.

    Re: 2* trip anyone?

    Hi Joe,

Sorry, I couldn't make it to the pub yesterday, but still would love to join you. I'm not in the UK until Wednesday next week and not sure about next weekend, as I will have friends staying over, but otherwise I'm almost always free.

    Thanks,

    Susanne

    Hello

Sorry i didn't make it down to the pub on Tuesday i was Stitched up at work.

So lets sort out a date, then this is a starting point to work from. How about Saturday the 4th of October? Providing we can get equipment signed out then?

    Trip on non-tidal thames possible?

I was thinking of another option at the weekend. A trip on the non-tidal Thames might be fairly simple to organise.

A short trip up to Richmond with some boats (and an L2) -

    • simple to get there: less than 1h drive
    • there are easy put ins (either the ramp next to the bridge or we could perhaps borrow the local clubs launch site if they wrere cool).
    • its pretty and probably has less youths and damaged warehouses.
    • good places to grab a tea and a bun at the end of the day

      We would need to

    • scout some parking
    • scout a few turn round and get out places - is there nice places for lunch?
    • check that the river rules don't apply at richmond and above.
    • check that we are allowed to paddle that piece of water
    • check is there were any crazy boating rules up there
we have a number of club members who are knowledgeable about this part of the Thames, perhaps they could chip in, or someone ?
