Glad to have this reappear in 'posts not read'.  I'd like to join in -morning, evening or both.

China / Alex -I'd wait until you've completed the four weeks of the beginner course.  You're clearly better than a 'normal' beginner but you'd need to be through some of the skills qualifications by June to be allowed on this trip by our club policies.  Not sure whetehr the organisers would allow a 2* who was a strong paddler or if you'd need to be 3*.  We'll have a better idea in three weeks time what your likely speed of progression will be (though of course lots depends on how much time on the water you put in.)

I must say it's great to see so much interest in this trip, when we're still 4-5 months away !

I wasn't proposing to do any "organising" until a bit closer to the time. And when the organising does start, we'll obviously have a lot to sort out by way of people's morning/afternoon preferences, boat bookings etc - but meanwhile, I suggest we carry on using this thread to log preferences, and I'll take the eventual "bookings" from here on a first come first served basis.

One thing I should have made clear (as Charlie reminds me) is that this is "probably" a minimum 3 star trip. I realise the club river rules are more flexible than this nowadays (which is why I only say "probably") but do bear in mind that 40K is a long way if you haven't paddled it before, and that even though we know the tides, nobody knows what kind of wind will be blowing on the day...

This might not be a good idea but what if we all meet at the basin then some of as drive down to Gravesend with gear and paddlers and swap over when the others arrive by river .Then they drive back .This means driving other peoples cars. I`m sure we can trust each other to drive carefully ,but have we enough drivers booked for this trip?

Trains are great!!

Checked the train times, and there's a train every 15 minutes getting you Gravesend-Charing Cross in just under an hour.  Don't mess up the beauty of the zero logistics, Pete :-)

 

For some odd reason, I had stuck this in my calendar for next weekend.

Well I think it's an interesting idea :)

Basically, you can "mirror" almost everything with this trip, using the Gravesend handover to transfer bits of paddling kit, return halves of train tickets, and even car keys ! However - I will probably leave it to individuals to form "pairings" of that sort nearer the time, according to their preferences.

Personally, I plan to go by train.

I presume that Sean, denied use of his Merc, will go by Eurostar from St Pancras to Ebbsfleet and by taxi from there

i would like to do this, prefer the morning

I have passed the old two star and will be training for three star but I think it unlikely that I would have my three star certificate by then.  Is this trip a possiblity or do I need to pass three star to take part.  I am certainly interested in taking part if possible.

I found the above event very interesting and want to join. Please let me know if I am allowed to join and any places left. And I can swim very well

Can I suggest you get an opinion from your coach ? They have seen you paddle and can advise you better.

From my point of view, I have to day this is primarily a 3-star trip. I don't want to say a definite "no" to others, because circumstances do vary - and I think we may have enough experienced paddlers to cover some 2-stars under the "buddy" system. But do remember we are paddling the estuary end of the river, which is 1 km across and has large ships going by. It is also a 40 km paddle, with few options for getting out early (you would basically have to be towed). You don't need to rush this either. There will be other chances in future.

(Hope that's not too discouraging!)
