Is Martin away?  I've not heard anything from him and it would be helpful to know when he'd driving to Folkestone/Dover!  Does anyone have a phone number for him?

    CAR 3 (traveling ???)
    D. Martin, Steve + gear + 2boats.
    Could take extra person.
Hi Nick, I'm still around, just haven't looked at the site for a whole week! I'm going tonight, so should be able to make final arrangements.

Dover on Saturday (for those accompanying the kids)

Firstly - thanks so much to those of you who are coming to help out with the swimmers! It's really really appreciated.

I'm meeting the kids ready to go on the beach in Dover for 9.30am on Saturday morning  - swims to start at 10am or shortly thereafter.

We meet on the beach in the old harbour on Marine Parade - can park right by the beach on parking meter (about £4 for 5 hours I think). There is a kind of weird bandstand and we'll be right near that.

A link here to google maps:

The plan is to do two swims - the swimmers get in, get cold, swim for a given time, and then get out, get dressed, shiver a lot, and then just as they have warmed up, they get in again for slightly longer (probably).

It really depends on weather conditions how long I'm going to make them swim on Saturday. Two weeks ago they did a 15 min and then a 20 min swim but of course the water is warmer now (about 12C) so they will be swimming more. I'd hope that they'll swim for 30 mins and then possibly 45 mins. We'll have to see how they get on though.

At moment wind is forecast to be 9mph ENE which is quite a good direction (it will be mostly flat in the harbour as the harbour will be sheltered from the wind by the cliffs as it's a Northerly) - same will be the case for you guys on your paddle to or from Folkstone I guess!

Guys - I can brief safety boats on Saturday morning - but do let me know if you have any questions that you want to ask now. My mobile is 07976 912 482

Thanks again, see you on Saturday!

Just looked up the weather on the BBC site ,no rain but a 26 mph north east wind is expected. Will be flying down to folkstone but hard coming back!

    Re: Dover on Saturday (Thanks!)

Thanks to Nick and Ailien for organising and for Steve for some useful tips. Slightly challenging conditions made for a perfect confidence booster and made me happy that I'd bought the Valley Pintail last year. I'm now hooked and look forward to more trips.

    Re: Dover on Saturday (Thanks!)

    Dear all,
That seemed to work out ok!
    A few thoughts:
Next time we could leave a car somewhere west of Folkestone in case of a one way trip - giving us more flexibility.
Helmets should be carried incase there is unexpected surf - also fun in rock gardens.
We should learn more about the surf off Copt Point and could spend a whole session there - but we should know a bit more about the rocks beneath...and does it work in a south westerly?
Those who didn't paddle with the swimmers could (had it not been so windy) have caught the tide up from the campsite to Shakespeare beach to meet us...

    Pete....shame there's no video!
