To add some structure to this thread, here is the proposal for the weekend and points of consideration.
Proposal
Weekend of surfing, either in Gower or Braunton / Saunton Sands (due to size of beach). Likely to be Llangennith due to location.
This is weather and surf dependent.
The group will be limited in size due to being able to manage number of people and peoples ability.
Why the above statement:
a) For the time of year the weather is likely to be very cold/windy and produce bad surf / big blown out storm surf / no surf / or just downright miserable weather.
b) Surfing is physically demanding (especially in time of year), it is cold and powerful and constantly getting wet – a lot more than on WW
c) An adequate roll and technique is preferred due to time of year, if you have not you will be constantly swimming, wet and cold. There is no shelter and the tide may leave the walk back to warmth long (with a boat as well).
d) Ensure you have the kit to stay warm.
e) The above choices of location are beach breaks that have enough room for surfers and kayakers, some issues exist with kayakers in the surf so we need to be aware of this.
f) The trip will be called off if the conditions are not suitable. Some of us will still go and probably surf or do a river who are experienced.
g) I personally will likely to do both depending on location and conditions.
No coach is being arranged as it stands, but people on the thread could sort one out if preferred - as per Martin's suggestion. I am willing to provide direction and support (as well as some others) but for most it will be a case of getting used to the surf in the breakers at the shoreline for the more inexperienced.
Points of Note
- It is very weather dependent.
- I am still going despite all of this as it is worth it all just to get out there – the above may sound a bit strong but it is true, the main part is that we do not have luxury of things on our doorstep and it may be worth waiting until more pleasant times to go for some people.
- The current list is around 12 people, I would not want this to be much higher to ensure we have enough cover from the experienced people and allow them to surf as well.
- You will have to think about transport and vehicles with roofracks. The club does not have transport and we rely on ourselves to arrange – not at the last minute.
Feel free to come and discuss with me on a Tuesday, if you do not know me ask around to find out.
