Hi Guys (the female personinvolved being included in this familiar address),
I am glade that so many of you enjoyed the session last Tuesday. I was pleasantly surprised by the standard and in fact a good nuymber showed some real potential as polo players. No-one was useless or out of place, which was great and also unusual in such a group.
I am happy to make myself available to do more of such coaching, the extent being commensurate with the enthusiasm and (to come later) committmeht of the group. I am NOT in a position to make a serious committment at this stage, but possibly once a month??? Maybe - I am away a certain amount in the next few months.
We MUST address the equipment if the sessions are to be regular and/or semi-serious - which does not mean "committed competitors", just doing it properly while there. Stuffing a BV in the bow is certainly not desirable. I actually used one of the Mae Wests as they are more durable, but still not good. Foam would work well. It is worth checking the cost of the adjustable footrests - for club boats they make sense and can satisfy everybody. A pump with pin shouldn't cost much at all. The helmats are fine and there are enough of the right BVs (with side padding) and paddles. I'm not keen to continue with people not having the right gear for safety. The Basin would surely agree, I suspect? The right goals etc can wait: if the interest is maintained, we must have a carpenter or plumber/ gas-fitter amongst us who can assenlbe a 1 x 1.5 rectangle, attach some netting and knock up two stands. Would the Basin assist with this?
Next time I'd do it with all the people in polo kayaks, helmats etc doing contact stuff and the others only passing, dribbleing and paddleing drills, then swap. Games would be something like 4 teams of 3 (we have 6 boats or 8?), so people get a rest and everyone playing is wearing the safety equipment.
I can't make it tonight, just too much to do at work when I am away next week coaching wildwater racing in Ticcino, Switzerland. Pity, I was looking forward to the Barby, especially with this weather.
Cheers
Tordi!
