Foundation Safety and Rescue Course - 29th June

    Hi

There is one space left for the above course (the new BCU Canoe Safety Test) that I've organised with http://www.chriseastabrook.co.uk.  He's going to come and run it at the Basin.  It's a 1 day course costing £40 and is a pre-requisite for any coaching qualifications you might want to get.

Only one place left so the first person to reply gets the spot and I'll email them the booking form.

Details of the course are here: http://www.chriseastabrook.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2008/05/fsrt-sy.pdf

    Cheers

    Paul

Re: Foundation Safety and Rescue Course - 29th June

Thanks Paul for finding Chris, and I think we can all recommend him for anyone interested in doing a FSR course in the future. Definitely good value for money and well worth doing.

The most valuable bits for me were looking at different rescues with a variety of craft and for a variety of victims in terms of body shape, size and upper body strength. Also the scenarios at the end were fun challenging and thought provoking.

One thing that would have been useful would have been something to take away at the end of the course with a summary of all the useful tips on techniques and equipment.

My only other criticism would be more related to the BCU syllabus, that for example we did Sea Kayaking self rescues, boat rescues and towing in greater depth in the 3 Star SK course than covered in this course, and that much of the course reflected a White Water bias, covered in greater depth by the 2 day White Water Safety and Rescue course.

Maybe the BCU should think about having more of a modular system to recognise duplicate skills learnt on other courses?

    O London, see
Swelling with naval pride, the pride of thee!
Wide, deep, unsullied Thames, meandering glides,
and bears thy wealth on mild majestic tides.

I agree a big thanks to Paul for fixing this.

I think you are being very optimistic in expecting the BCU to re-arrange their new syllabuses for our convienence.  We are only the members after all.

The positive is that we now will have 5 people with FSR and able to register as L1 coach learners.   When we have done all the paper work, we can then look at getting a L1 course set up.  All of which is a better place that we were in a week ago.  We also learn some new skills and can put our input in to the current coaching program, especially as we all noted the teaching of 2* rescues which probably need to be updated.

    Regards

    Rob
