    Introduction to open canoeing course 8, 15 & 22 January 2008

I am planning to run an introduction to open canoeing course on three consecutive Tuesdays as above. This is intended for those with little or no open canoe experience who would like to try open boats or who need to get the experience for the new Two Star award.

The intention is to do the first two sessions on The Basin and then, subject to transport, finish the course with a journey on the canal during the final session.

There are six places on the course so if you would like to take part please sign up below.

Can I sign up too? I have a vehicle with a tow bar for a local trip as well. (1960s Landrover so any more than about 20 miles is a bit too bone rattling and noisy for comfort...)

Tom, the Landrover will be very useful. The local trip I have in mind is only to the Regent's Canal at Limehouse Basin so bone rattling should not be an issue!

    Hi, Luke,

I am tempted, but, how far will this progress me towards being competent to do a new style 2* award?

    Re: Introduction to open canoeing course 8, 15 & 22 January 2008

    Hi Rob,

Being able to paddle an open canoe is one of the two main parts of the new 2*. I believe this course is exactly what you need to get the fundamentals of paddling an open canoe and pass this part of the 2* assessment.

Beyond the whole stars thing, open canoes are great, and paddling them is a lot of fun. Getting exposure in as many aspects of paddlesport as possible will help you consolidate your skills and see how they transfer between boats.

I should soon be having my first experience in a slalom boat!!! This is what coach super-Dave suggested in Scotland so as to improve precise paddling!!! Surprise

    Hi Luke

I've never paddled an open canoe before and as a man with Canadian roots I think that ought to be rectified.

Thanks for organising this. I look forward to it.

    Re: Introduction to open canoeing course 8, 15 & 22 January 2008

Hi Rob, further to what Joanna has said above I can confirm that this course is exactly what you need to gain the required canoeing experience for the new Two Star award.

For the new award you need experience paddling two different types of 'paddlesport craft', assuming you have done some kayaking this ticks off that requirement. The new award also requires experience of these two different craft in two different locations. The course takes place on The Basin and the Regent's Canal. You also need two journeys of not less than two hours duration or experience of two competitions. The canal trip should be about an hour and a half on the water but including all the coming and going I think we can call it a two hour trip, plus you'll have the opportunity to try all the securing, carrying and car topping stuff referenced in the syllabus.
