Re: Swanage Tidal Race Practice, Autumn 08

Hello everyone. If we need it, I can tow the trailer to Swanage. I have room for four passengers. Susi has already booked. Are we agreed on going for the October 11/12 weekend?

Re: Swanage Tidal Race Practice, Autumn 08

Hi all - sorry for not having posted anything on timing but busy getting son off to university and planning September's (Sun 21) Thames Triangle trip first.
It's great seeing you getting on with this but...
    • Has anyone looked at the tides for the 11/12 October?
    • so far as I know we want an ebb to make the race work best.
    • We want enough hours of the ebb before darkness to make it worth doing...maybe look for ebb beginning about midday or before.
    • 11/12 is just after neaps.

The other thing is do we have enough strong paddlers and licensed radio operators to organise a safety crew for this date?
I think we need two (preferably) people on the shore with VHF and binoculars and a couple of catchers - also with VHF- in the water, not playing but watching.  That's three to four non-playing members, at any one time.
What do you do if a capsize and rescuer dissapear round Durlston Head before you can get them in to the eddy?  Can they paddle back round the corner?

If the tide timings are reasonable then maybe going ahead on this date is best, get it sussed out - then return on a more springy tide?

    Your thoughts?

Re: Swanage Tidal Race Practice, Autumn 08

TIdes for 11/12 October are as follows:

    11th:

    HW: 6:24 (1.8m) LW: 13:18 (1.1m) HW: 18:06 (1.9m)

    12th:

    HW:6:54 (1.9m) LW: 9:30 (1.6m) HW: 10:42 (1.7m)

This is from a dodgy table I found here: http://www.climbers-club.co.uk/tides/SWAN1008.HTM

I can't help on the ebb question but Joanna and I are both VHF licensed operators. I am also happy to be part in a rota of people watching/catching/playing if that works. I guess the other question is if we have enough VHF radios among us. The club has two but not sure what people have.

Still very keen to do this!

Re: Swanage Tidal Race Practice, Autumn 08

    Posting for Nick J:

    Tides for Swanage/Peveril Point tide race.  11 & 12 October 2008
These are my workings but could well be wrong so check them yourselves!

Tide phase - midway between neap/spring (check this too)

    All times BST
Ebb begins HW Dover minus 30mins.
Sat 11    HW Dover        Ebb begins    Mid-ebb        Flood begins
                    0921        - 0:30 = 0851        1151                1451
                    2157        - 0:30 = 2127        0017 (Sun)        0317

    Sun 12
                    1002        - 0:30 = 0932       1232                1532
                    2222        - 0:30 = 2152       0052 (Mon)       0352 (Mon)

Saturday is an early start with mid ebb (strongest flow) about 1151.
Sunday looks more relaxed with mid ebb about 1232 and the peak at teatime, 1532.
The good thing about the early start is that we have plenty of daylight for the race and don't get overtaken by darkness.

Should we have a meeting to discuss the general idea and to start on specific issues?

Re: Swanage Tidal Race Practice, Autumn 08

The VHF count so far: licenced operators Dimitris, Joanna, Nick and Jon (me). We have the two club radios, Nick has one,  I have one and I might be able to borrow another, so I think we have enough, though more would do no harm. The rules allow for unlicenced people to use a vhf under the supervision of a licence holder. While we may all not be onboard the same vessel, conversations between licenced and unlicenced operators within the same kayak group should be considered as supervised, so I dont think we need to worry about this too much.

A good friend of mine Alister, not a club member,  may join us for one of the days, He will use his own kit, boat and radio. I can vouch for his abilities. If there are any objections or club rules which would not allow this please let me know.

I would prefer to stay at a campsite rather than a hotel. Any other campers?

Re: Swanage Tidal Race Practice, Autumn 08

    Dear all,

The date is fast approaching and we need to start serious planning...like who is coming? what transport we're using?  what safety arrangements we need to make? ...and what it is that we're trying to do?

I see this trip as a weekend trip to practice rough and moving water skills; rolling, rescues, self-rescues and surfing standing waves.
Because of the tide times we need to be on the water just after breakfast - so that needs either a Friday evening drive to Swanage or a VERY early Saturday start from London.

Jon and I propose a meeting this Tuesday 23 Sept, in the upstairs classroom at the Basin, after paddling i.e. 2100 to 2200.
We'll bring maps and charts and so on.

Come and ask any questions you want.  Come along if you're curious but can't actually come on the trip.

Re: Swanage Tidal Race Practice, Autumn 08

Agreed - Joanna and I will be driving (probably Friday night but have to confirm this). We have room for 1 more person (or 2 at a squeeze but would rather avoid this). No room for more than 2 boats though.

I am ok to camp unless people prefer other accommodation types.

    See you on Tuesday.
