This page lists suggestions and resources for flatwater and gentle moving water [[Club trips|trips]]. It looks to cover some easy to access rivers and navigations that are easy to get to from London and the south east of England, as well as covering a few favourites further afield. Considering that the Thames is navigable from at least Devises to Westminster, with portages over/around the locks, you just need to choose a section. This section comes through Henley, site of the famous regatta and always busy with rowers either practicing or racing in their own sectioned off strip of the Thames.

A paddle that is local to the club with a few portages. You can walk boats over in about 10-15 minutes if you have strong shoulders or do a quick car shuttle. You can then paddle a loop though the navigation and the river, with lunch in Victoria Park. Its an urban paddle and the water in the Limehouse Cut can be a bit dirty and smelly. Route (in either direction) is Limehouse Cut, the Lea, east through Hertford Union Canal then south on Regent's canal back to Limehouse Basin.

The lower parts of the Waveney are mildly tidal and more than a little windy, its a beautiful and remote area. its never runs dry which makes planning a doddle. A branch leads to Oulton Broad, offering a trip with different types of water to paddle in. The [http://www.waveneyrivercentre.co.uk/ Waveney River Centre] offers camping and other accommodation, and good put-ins (and might have a few canoes to hire).

The upper parts are a different river completely. You can start near the top, where it starts as a narrow river and paddle past mills to where it branches and flows past Bungay and the loop. It can run out of water though.

Danabel: fixing old markup and spelling

The [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/River_Waveney river Waveney] is a slow flowing, mildly tidal river that sits between Suffolk and Norfolk.
There are some pleasure cruisers but they move pretty slowly. There is some great wildlife including rare birds i'm told such as the [http://www.rspb.org.uk/wildlife/birdguide/name/c/cettiswarbler/index.asp cetti's warbler] and the [http://www.rspb.org.uk/wildlife/birdguide/name/m/marshharrier/index.asp Marsh Harrier]. It can get windy.

We stayed at the [http://www.waveneyrivercentre.co.uk/ Waveney River Centre], some in Chalets, some camping, taking 3 open boats and a mixture of river runners.

==the site==

The chalets looked new - 2 good showers - one ensuite, and a decent kitchen also. The camping had reasonable showers, and someone mentioned a swimming pool. There's a pub on site, serving real ales and ok food, though the entertainment wasn't everyone's cup of tea. Not everyone made it for last food orders on the Friday night. The site does offer canoe hire if you book early enough (they have 2 old towns i think)
Good put ins - there was a ramp, but that was secured so instead the kayaks seal launched off a soft bank, and the canoes were put in at the marina.

==our paddles==

===Saturday===
On the Saturday we paddled out to [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oulton_Broad Oulton Broad]] paddling down the Waveney and then turning into Oulton Dyke. the wind kept the solo Canoers on their toes until we turned into Oulton Dyke when they zoomed ahead. Once on the Broad we got to play - there are a series of posts to try to weave around, and cutting across the open water against the wind was fun.
At the far end of the Broad we disembarked and looked for lunch. A cafe wa found and Bacon Sarnies and coffee was imbibed. Yum.
On the way back we explored the back waters that sit at the side of the Broad.

For the evening, we decided on the pub for a change. Food wasn't bad, beer was good, the entertainment was, well, i think Gary-oke is unique offering that should be experienced first hand.

===Sunday===

We paddled further up the river on the Sunday, heading under and old swing railway bridge, to a stop near The Dukes Head pub - doubling up in the open boats to get some speed against the wind. Turned out that the Pub is a very posh restaurant, these days, but they were nice and let us eat our picnic on their outside tables as it was before their lunch service. After a quick scoot back, we fed the ducks, and played a quick game in the marina before showering and changing in the camp toilets and heading for home.

=== Next time===
we would think about taking some sea kayaks instead of river runners to move at the same pace as a pair in a canoe.

Danabel: Created page with 'Sarah, Dan, Fiona, Richard, Lucy, Sarah & Shep headed to Whitney-on-Wye in Herefordshire (English side of border). Staying in at the Boat Inn (B&B, camping and pub) for 2 nights....'

Sarah, Dan, Fiona, Richard, Lucy, Sarah & Shep headed to Whitney-on-Wye in Herefordshire (English side of border). Staying in at the Boat Inn (B&B, camping and pub) for 2 nights. We hired 6 boats from
[http://www.celticcanoes.co.uk/ Celtic Canoes] who dropped us off Saturday morning in Glasbury (Welsh side of the border) and we paddled back down the Wye to the campsite.

After a feed and a very disturbed night from other revellers and attempts at using Dan's head & tent as a trampoline, we paddled on down to Byford where the boat were collected and we were dropped back at the campsite.

Weather was really hot and sunny on the second day, and over the whole weekend we got to practice canoeing in moving water: ferry gliding, breaking in and out, a few small rapids & weir drop, lining back up to do it again. We even got to pole for a stretch, some gunnel bobbing, and managing trim for padding into the wind.

We ran out time to do the drop at Mornington Falls (just below the last take out), but there is already a plan to go back and do it again..... and stay somewhere else!

==The Plan==
We are aiming for Penzance in Cornwall. Richard Uren will be our coach and also we get another coach from another company. They have boats to hire, I'm waiting for numbers.

What's good about Penzance is that it is in Cornwall. It can be reached by train if don't have enough cars. There is a possibility to find somewhere to paddle if the weather gets worst, although not if it is howling F7 or more.

The price for coach/leader per day is £175, which is average and the boats are about £12 per day.

Twelve of us drove to Felixstowe, Leaving London at 0800 with a plan to depart Felixstowe Ferry at 1100; we sort of managed it. It looked to be a lovely spot for people to be waiting anyway.
We crossed the mouth of the Deden giving us some early excitement as the flow met the sea, and then followed the shore to Shingle Street, stopping for first lunch on the steeply slopping beaches.

Paddling a little further we reached the mouth of the Alde where different groups played in the conditions created by the the river outflow, the incoming tide and waves and the shingle banks.

After a second snack stop, we paddled back the way we came, this time with a little more chop and waves. Getting back to the Deden, a short portage saved us a big paddle around and a now calm river to cross back to the Ferry Boat Inn and our take out.
