Shep: 3 Andys trip to the Small Isles

The Three Andys: May 26th to June 2nd 2018. Ref: OS Landranger Map 39

The Small Isles
The Small Isles consist of the island jewels of Eigg, Rum, Muck and Canna and lie to the south of Skye.

We traveled to Scotland at the start of the May Bank Holiday and found that the unusually warm weather had encouraged significant competition for the available campsites. We eventually found three flat spaces near the foreshore outside of Arisaig and awoke to a beautiful morning, a wonderful view towards Eigg and an infestation of the dreaded Highland midge. Luckily our paddling days were insect free and our only other real encounter with Culicoides Impunctatus came on our return to the mainland when bottles of Skye Red beer were supped through midge head nets. A difficult but necessary task as this has been the worst year in memory for the pesky little blighters.

With kayaks packed with food and water for a week’s paddling we explored the skerries in Loch nan Ceall before taking the northern passage towards Eigg which lies 15 NMs from the mainland at Arisaig.

Weather and sea conditions were perfect and the north east coast of Eigg was reached in quick time before, after a rocky landing for lunch, we continued our journey around the northern tip of the island and arrived in surf at The Singing Sands. This is a wonderful beach which would not be out of place in the Caribbean but its name is somewhat misleading because it squeaks rather than sings as you walk along it. We set up camp and a meal was concocted, or perhaps invented, on a driftwood fire: Chorizo curry followed by fruit cake with custard and washed down with copious amounts of Sainsbury’s finest bladdered red wine [I think there’s a pun in there somewhere!] whilst reflecting on the several porpoises we had encountered during our day’s paddle.

The next day we left for Muck with the intention of returning that evening to The Singing Sands. Not having to break camp and repack the boats was a bonus and we made the most of the south flowing stream to paddle along the exposed western coast and then cross the Sound of Eigg to Muck. To save time we carried our kayaks across a natural causeway, revealed at low tide, between the main island and a smaller one off the northeast coast. The large, uneven and slippery rocks made this a difficult task but the short cut allowed us some extra time to relax and replenish our drink supplies in Port Mor before exploiting the north flowing tidal stream for our homeward journey. Returning to Eigg we found that a group of kayakers from a club in North Staffs, along with two solo paddlers, had pitched their tents on our singing beach but this was the only time on our island hopping travels that we shared camping with others.

On our third day of paddling we made the 5 nautical mile crossing to Dibidil in the south of Rum before kayaking a similar distance to Harris which lies midway along the sheer cliffs that form the western coastline. The timing of the favourable tidal flows meant this was a short paddling day but the camping at Harris proved a wonderful compensation. We shared our temporary home with deer and horses and luxuriated in a natural bathing pool formed at the base of a picture postcard stream just before it meets the sea. Harris is particularly noted for the mausoleum built in the style of a Greek temple by Sir George Bullough of Kinloch Castle. It looked forlornly out to sea from the headland immediately to the right of our campsite whilst guarding four tombs.

The next day, and again a late start to account for tidal flows, we headed for the western cape at Camas na h-Atha and then paddled across the Sound of Canna to the southern coast of Sanday before eventually finding a beach on which to land at Haslam near Tarbert Bay on Canna. This journey was potentially a very challenging one, as evidenced by the naming of Wreck Bay along the rugged western coast of Rum, but the sea conditions were benign and the weather continued to be more Mediterranean in high summer than Scotland in late May.

In the evening we tramped a couple of miles to the small village on Canna in search of a pub although initially this was much more in hope than expectation because a PH was not marked on our OS map. But the further we walked, and the thirstier we became, the more we were convinced that an unlimited supply of Skye Red and Skye Black lay just around the corner. Fortunately this rather bizarre behaviour ended just short of collective hysteria when Andy Nutter noted, and became fascinated by, the enlarged genitalia of a prize Scottish bull that was tethered in a field close to the road. We came to our senses at this point and began our return journey with the conversation taking a downward turn.

The next day we headed to Garrisdale Point at the extreme west of Canna and waited for the predicted change in the tidal flow that would support our circumnavigation of the island. It was during this period that we encountered the first of the three sea eagles that we saw on our journey. Then, fed and watered, we paddled along the northern coast, ignoring the eerie wailing sounds of a colony of seals on the rocks at Sgeir nan Sgarbh, until we entered the dominium of nesting birds along the sheer cliffs either side of the bay at Stoc a Ghallubhaich. Without doubt the puffins stole the show: flying past us in their scores like windup, mechanical birds with little wings rapidly flapping as they searched for small fish further out at sea.

Camping on Sanday

In the late afternoon we passed the ruined castle at Rubha Carr-innis and entered Canna Harbour before passing under the bridge that connects the main island to the smaller one of Sanday and then landing at the beautiful beach shown in the photograph above. After setting up camp and eating dinner-an Andy Geen inspired hotpot followed by ginger cake and custard- we retired to the Canna Café and finally imbibed the elusive selection of Skye beers.

On our final morning in the Small Isles we packed our boats for the last time and then paddled to the pier that lies on the north side of Canna Harbour. We had a few hours to wait until the ferry arrived to take us to Mallaig on the mainland and so we ate a late breakfast in burning sunshine al fresco at Canna Café in the company of a couple of Dutch yachtsmen and then explored the grounds of Canna House [currently being renovated by the National Trust who own the island].

The ferry journey allowed a couple more sightings of porpoises before our disembarkation at Mallaig which required considerable effort given that the kayaks were still packed with kit and we had little time before the boat left for Skye. We then had the logistical problem of retrieving the two cars that had been left at Arisaig but this was solved by Andys Nutter and Geen hiring a taxi and the residual Andy waiting with the kayaks at the dockside. Finally, after a fish and chip supper, we drove to a wild camping spot along the coast from Arisaig and although we were tormented by midges nothing could detract from a memorable adventure in The Small Isles of Scotland.

by Helen Motha

After an early start, our group of twelve met at half past nine in the car park of the Shepperton Whitewater Canoe Centre. Half the group travelled there by train and on foot from Waterloo, the others by car.
Many of the canoeists had the goal of practicing skills in preparation of upcoming open-boat assessments. Canadian-style canoes were either brought by car (Lucy and Toby) or hired from the centre (Tom, Cai, Sven, Ian, Marco and Matt). Chris brought his own kayak, whilst Stephanie, Richard and Helen hired Venture Flex kayaks.

We set off on the water in glorious sunshine around 10am, and after navigating our way out of Shepperton marina, headed west onto the main body of the Thames. Shortly afterwards took the right-side of the fork at Desborough Island, following the meandering river past suburban homes looking out over the river. On this stretch we also passed by Desborough Sailing Club and a high-security fortress, also known as Shepperton Manor, former home to a Victorian shipping magnate. Following two bends in the river, we reached a confluence and D’Oyly Carte Island, home to the mysterious and dilapidated Eyot House. We also spotted some wildlife on the river bank, including some herons and swans.

It was only a short paddle onwards to Shepperton Lock. Chris showed us the best spot and means of navigating the lock. We took it in turns to climb out onto the river bank beside the lock, before hauling our boats onto the bank beside us. Working in pairs we carried our boats around the side of the lock, before launching back into the water for the short hop across the river to the Thames Court pub.
Arriving at the pub just before 1pm, we enjoyed a tasty pub lunch and pint outdoors, before setting back onto the river at 2pm under cloudier skies.

clear
On our journey eastwards the lock keeper kindly let us go through the lock on our boats, for many in the group it was their first time in a lock. Past the lock we took the much shorter route along the south-side of Desborough Island. This shortcut enabled us to arrive back at the water centre around 3:30pm.

clear
Among the less experienced, the three in hired kayaks swapped places with some of the canoeists on the homeward stretch, so everyone got some practice in canoes. Having an hour to spare some of the novice canoeists took the opportunity to practice skills such as the bow rudder and turns, both solo and in tandem boats. Chris also taught us some different canoe rescues, including the curl and X rescue, and Lucy gave us some useful advice for breaking the seal on the water where the boat is too difficult to lift.

The more experienced in the group also got to learn new skills, with Lucy hoisting a colourful sail on her canoe for the first time on the homestretch.

After getting off the water at 4:30pm, we loaded the boats and took advantage of the shop discount before heading off home.

On our journey eastwards the lock keeper kindly let us go through the lock on our boats, for many in the group it was their first time in a lock. Past the lock we took the much shorter route along the south-side of Desborough Island. This shortcut enabled us to arrive back at the water centre around 3:30pm.

Wild Camping In Scotland: September 2017
By Andy Garbett

“How do you fancy a wild camping trip to Scotland?” This question, posed on a Tuesday evening paddle towards Westminster, was easy to
answer in the affirmative given the expectation that such an event would never materialise.
That it would be discussed enthusiastically in The Prospect of Whitby and then disappear
down a black hole of busy lives. But I had not counted on the persistence of my fellow
Andys and a few months later I, a man with a visceral aversion to life in the wild, was held to
my word and was travelling northwards to Glencoe. Help!

<div align="center">(*1) Andy Nutter’s catalogue of photos for our trip can be found at https://www.flickr.com/photos/andynutter/albums/72157687120100844</div>

We stayed at The Red Squirrel Campsite before driving the next morning, one of us still
feeling the effects of overindulgence at the Clachaig Public House, to Sconcer on the Isle of
Skye.

By early afternoon we had packed our boats with camping gear plus food and water for a
week and set off from the slipway at Sconcer with the initial aim of circumnavigating the
Islands of Raasay and Rona. We decided not to take advantage of the tidal flow towards the
east but to go north through the Narrows of Raasay and paddle along the west coast of the
island. Landing and camping opportunities are limited in this area and we had identified a
good spot that we could reach before nightfall. However, the expected south-westerly wind
had turned from light to moderate and now blew perversely into our faces from the north.
An easy paddle to our first base had become more difficult and, with the prospect of fading
light, we curtailed our journey at Holoman Bay where we were fortunately able to set up
camp.

Drift wood was found, a fire established and before very long a Malaysian chicken curry was
being washed down with a couple of glasses (*2) of shiraz from the wine bag that seemed to
have been perfectly designed to fit into the far extremity of my front hatch. And as the
fading embers flickered and the Milky Way lit up in the firmament so I began to warm to this
wild camping lark.

(*2) Andy Nutter is a man for all seasons. He was able to produce both wine and whisky glasses from seemingly
bottomless hatches which also carried an array of cooking equipment. His experience in wild camping and the
outdoor life proved a godsend.

We set off the next morning on a calm sea and with a determination to enjoy the paddle to
our next overnight stop that lay towards the northern tip of Raasay and within sight of Rona.
We took time to explore the coastline and were often accompanied by common and, later,
grey seals. Andy Nutter provided fishing lines but we were in competition with an
extraordinary number of cormorants and had to wait a couple more days before enjoying
freshly caught mackerel lightly cooked over a wood fire.

clear

clear

The next day, our fourth out of London, we crossed Caol Rona in benign conditions and
began to paddle along the western coastline of the smaller island of Rona. Again the
emphasis was upon enjoying the environment, the sea and the topography, rather than
racing towards a finishing line. So we took our time over a six mile journey to Loch a bhraige
where Charlie Skrine had stayed the previous year with friends. But Charlie’s beach was now
occupied by grey seals and their pups and so we sought refuge further along the sea loch
where camping conditions proved more difficult.

Loch a' Bhraige is best described as a large, sheltered bay and it provides a natural harbour
for a NATO station which is overlooked in the middle distance by the beautiful Rona
lighthouse. The proximity of a secretive military establishment slightly unnerved me and I
became worryingly susceptible to tricks played by the rising tide and the fading light. A good
night’s sleep, or therapy, was required but for me, as a camping novitiate, it was usually
difficult to achieve.

clear

clear

The morning of the fifth day was probably the highlight of our trip. The northern tip of Rona
is a collection of skerries and inlets that provide the perfect habitat for the seals that
constantly appeared: as curious to see us as we were them. The sea and weather conditions
were perfect and we took advantage to explore, to fish or simply absorb and enjoy our
surroundings. Kayaking perfection!

clear

clear

We had planned to paddle to the site of the ruined Brochel castle that lies almost halfway
along the eastern coast of Raasay but, after completing the circumnavigation of Rona, we
decided quite spontaneously to head for the Scottish mainland. The six mile journey was
achieved in quick time but we arrived in Applecross Bay at low tide and faced the arduous
task of carrying our boats some distance over a rocky beach and then hauling them up a
long and steep incline to the security of a designated campsite. This episode, compounded
by the onset of heavy rain, might have disheartened us but a hot shower, a bite to eat and a
couple of pints at the local pub did wonders for both body and soul. Roll on tomorrow!

clear

PHOTO: Room for three only! (Awaiting photo) center
