What to Bring

What you need to bring on your first visit

It is important you wear the correct clothing when you come paddling. What you wear should not saturate with water if you fall in. Nylon garments such as fleeces and modern sports shirts are better than cotton if you have them and woolly jumpers are definitely out. If you do not have gear designed for canoeing we recommend the following:

  • Tracksuit bottoms, leggings or shorts
In winter you may want to have two layers. Alternatively, a wetsuit will be appropriate as long as it does not restrict your arm movement (wetsuits designed for surfing or general water sports are usually less restrictive than those for scuba diving).
    No jeans.
  • T-shirt, sweatshirt, thermal top
In cold conditions, several thin layers are better than one thick layer.
  • Pair of old trainers, plimsolls or wetsuit boots (your feet will get wet)
Shoes without laces are preferable. If you must wear shoes with laces then keep the laces short to avoid them snagging on foot pegs in the canoes.
No flip flops or wellington boots.
  • 20p piece
Lockers are available - these take a 20p piece.
  • If you wear glasses
You will need something to keep them on and avoid losing them if they fall off. An elastic band that can be purchased from sports shops should be worn and you should also have a cord to secure the glasses to your person to avoid losing them if they do fall off.
  • Towel. Hot showers are available.

The club will provide you with a cag (a thin splashproof and windproof top) and a buoyancy aid.

You will get very wet so bring a towel and a change of clothes to put on after the session.
