Who We Are

Tower Hamlets Canoe Club is a London based canoe/kayaking club conveniently located in central London at Shadwell Basin. The club was formally set up back in 1984, although people had been getting together informally to paddle at Shadwell Basin from the 1970's.

We have club evenings every Tuesday throughout the year (rain or shine) where both experienced and new members practice their paddling, and we provide training up to BCU 3 star level. Paddling/training takes place either in Shadwell Basin, on the River Thames or in a nearby indoor swimming pool.

THCC is committed to the BCU Equal Opportunites Policy and takes reasonable and practical steps to support this policy:

"BCU/Canoe England is fully committed to the principles of equality of opportunity and aims to ensure that everyone has a genuine and equal opportunity to participate in Paddlesport at all levels and in all roles of the sport, irrespective of their age, gender, ability, disability, religion, race, ethnic origin, nationality, colour, social status or sexual orientation."

Administration of the club

The club is run "by members for members" on a voluntary, non-commercial, non-profit making basis.  All club members pay an annual membership fee plus a weekly fee each Tuesday they paddle - even when acting as instructors. The club receives no grants, sponsorship or charitable donations.

Club funds are used to pay for use of Shadwell Basin facilities, the swimming pool, purchasing club equipment and for hosting of the website. Any organised trips are paid for by the trip’s participants. Our committee members, instructors, web administrator and other volunteers give their time on a strictly voluntary basis and receive no remuneration or compensation other than assistance towards the cost of coaching qualifications.

We ask that all our members help with the running of the club by: taking the time to read club notices on the website; posting useful information themselves; organising trips; welcoming beginners and showing them where to find kit etc; and assisting our instructors with training groups. We welcome any members who want to get more involved in the running of the club or make suggestions. Members wishing to do so should speak to a committee member or section rep.
