First step is to become a full member of the club by filling in the [[Membership form|form on the website]] and paying the membership fee to the club treasurer (he can be found each Tuesday after paddling upstairs in the Prospect of Whitby). On to paddling, and as with the beginners course, it all happens on Tuesday evenings, so come along, put your name on the board and join one of the coached groups.

We will also send you details on how to join the club if you wish to continue to paddle with us.

Each Tuesday there will be volunteer coaches providing training geared towards gaining all the skills needed for the 2 star award. This means most evenings there will be a group working on open canoe skills, a group working on kayak skills and a group heading to the pool to work on rescue skills and rolling.

Once you join our club, you are welcome to come back to the club on any Tuesday. We recommend that you join one of the Skill Development Clinics, where you will be able to build on the skills you gained in the induction programme, do a spray deck test and meet your fellow club members.

It is also worth mentioning that the club works on a slightly more informal basis now you have finished your beginners course. The focus moves away from a formal structured course and on to more paddler-led development. This means that there will be coaching each week, but it will be up to you to decide which skills you want to work on and to ask whoever is taking the group to make sure they are included in the coaching that evening. Once you reach the required standard for each of the 2 star skills you can get them signed off in your logbook and when you have everything signed off one of the coaches will be able to award you with your 2 star.

Please note that some Club activities may have certain prerequisites, so don’t hesitate to ask one of the leaders or coaches if not sure.

Now you have completed the Course for beginners. What next?

Shortly after completing your induction, you will be sent a BC Discover Award certificate via email. The certification fee is already included in the price of the induction.

We will also send you details on how to join the club if you wish to continue to paddle with us.

Once you join our club, you are welcome to come back to the club on any Tuesday. We recommend that you join one of the Skill Development Clinics, where you will be able to build on the skills you gained in the induction programme, do a spray deck test and meet your fellow club members.

Please note that some Club activities may have certain prerequisites, so don’t hesitate to ask one of the leaders or coaches if not sure.

Most Tuesdays there will also be volunteer coaches providing training on all the skills needed for the Explore award. This means that there may be a group working on white water or sea kayaking skills or a group practising safety and rescue techniques. Make sure to pick up one of our Explore logbooks where you can track your progress.

You can also join a polo game, which takes place almost every Tuesday.

It is also worth mentioning that the club works on a slightly more informal basis now that you have finished the course. The focus moves away from a formal structured course and on to more paddler-led development. This means that there will be coaching most weeks, but it will be up to you to decide which skills you want to work on and to ask whoever is taking the group to make sure they are included in the coaching that evening. Once you reach the required standard for the Explore award your coach will be able to arrange for a certificate through British Canoeing.
